Outrageous, hilarious, and simply beautiful, Iestyn Edwards' performances of Anything for a Tenor: Iraq and I, and Madame Galina New Forces Sweetheart are coming to delight us at this summer. Iestyn not only has the voice of an angel and a wicked sense of humour, but he does a mean pirouette. Thinking he’d be singing for the Navy in London, Iestin once approached Combined Services Entertainment for an audition. Now he’s just back from his third stint in Afghanistan, having started with Iraq. Championed by Joanna Lumley, who chose his recording of Tom Bowling for her Desert Island Disks, Iestyn as Madama Galina has had his own Channel 4 series, appeared on Sky Arts' Ballet Boyz, Janet Street-Porter for TalkBack and in the Olivier Award winning West End show C’est Barbican.
Anything For A Tenor: Iraq And I Written and performed by Iestyn Edwards As heard by Her Majesty, and on Desert Island Discs, Midweek, Woman’s Hour and Loose Ends, this part-revue, part dramatic monologue follows Iestyn on Combined Services Entertainment tours through Iraq and Afghanistan in the company of Her Majesty’s Finest. Iestyn sings works by Verdi, Brahms, Sherman, Schubert and Sullivan and tells tales of his tutu going AWOL during a rocket attack, of an RSM ‘Tina’ Turner square-bash all round Basra Palace and of Royal Marines Commando ‘Stacks’ hoiking him to sit on the naughty tank. ‘Hilarious and touching stories…proud is not the word! Go Tutu Boy. You rock!’ Joanna Lumley
Madame Galina New Forces Sweetheart Written and performed by Iestyn Edwards. Directed by Diana Quick. “Part clown, part stand up, part classical ballerina, total hit! This extraordinary character has to be the result of a drunken one-night stand between Tommy Cooper and Margot Fonteyn”. Liverpool Post. Presenting the show that Madame Galina has been performing for Her Majesty’s Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan! Sent on tour by the Moscow Mafia because Russia’s ex-president isn’t called Putin for nothing and Mrs. Putin is put-out, Madame Galina is booked to tour Pas De Deux with Oleg Klimtov. So why is she opening her set with a spectacular solo? Where is Oleg? All will become clear. “The Bargain of the Week ticket…non-stop belly-ache laughter, superb fouettés - and played straight, which is precisely what makes it so funny.” Time Out
