SOTA enables 6-18 year olds to develop skills in dance, singing and drama in a creative and stimulating environment. Working with professionally trained workshop leaders and performers, the emphasis is on fun through confidence building, skills development and expression.

Brand new drama class for adults exploring theatre through games, performance and discussion. Each week the class will focus on relaxation techniques, vocal exercises and improvisation. The course will explore the creative process leading to performance, looking at the ideas of practitioners such as Peter Brook, Laban and Stanislavsky.

This is a social forum where you can build your confidence, learn about theatre and meet like-minded people. This relaxed class will approach drama in new and interesting ways.

  • Performance skills

drawing on the works of innovative pioneering practitioners of theatre in order to tap into our individual creativity

  • Confidence building

Performing and interacting with others can be a great confidence boost that feeds into our outside lives

  • Vocal exercises and relaxation techniques

At the beginning of each class we will focus on breathing and vocal warm-ups to develop the voice in readiness for performance

  • Play-reading

We will cover a selection of both modern and classic plays culminating in a performance that will be open to the public.

 

£80 for the term.

The Firestation’s dedicated youth theatre helps young people tap into their passion and creative potential, with workshop games and exercises, theatre visits and great productions. Sessions begin with drama games and exercises to boost self-confidence and build performance skills, before each group work together as a team to create performances for the end of term showcase.

Develop your skills, ambition and confidence…where could your ideas take you?

  • Juniors Ages 6-10 4pm – 5pm £50
  • Firestarters 2 Ages 11-15 5.pm – 6.30pm £60
  • Firestarters 3 Age 16+ 6.30pm – 8.30pm £70

Your first session is always free!

Joining Firestarters allows young people to sign up for special events and outings – this term younger students will have the opportunity to take part in a special workshop with a renowned Poi artist. Poi is an energetic circus skill which originated as a Maori warrior dance! Older students will have the opportunity to visit the National Theatre in London for a special Backstage Tour (small additional cost involved).

Juniors
This term, students will be showcasing their own versions of traditional tales; learning about scripts and storytelling, how to use physicality to portray a character, and devising alternative endings to some rather familiar stories! Juniors session also include lots of time to make friends and learn key skills through fun team games!

Firestarters 2
Students (ages 11-15) will be creating their own material inspired by stories in the media. They will explore how to tell a story from different perspectives, how to build a character through physicality and voice, and experiment with communicating a message to the audience. The group will decide together what form they want their performance to take, and work cooperatively to showcase their work.

Firestarters 2
Firestarters 2 (ages 16+) will develop advanced performance skills and creative interests. The group will set the agenda for their own learning, choosing whether to work on scripted or devised work and what themes to pursue. Previously with 16+ groups, Clare has developed a devised musical, shot short films, rehearsed scripted drama and facilitated playwriting workshops. If required, Clare can also give directorial notes on audition monologues.

Course Leaders
Firestarters Youth Theatre workshops are run by 2headedpigeon Theatre Company, residents at the Firestation Centre for Arts & Culture. Artistic Director Clare Shucksmith works as a drama tutor and youth theatre director, as well as a playwright and fringe theatre producer.
